What are thrombosed hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are classified as either internal or external based on whether they are inside or outside of the anal canal.  Thrombosed hemorrhoids are external hemorrhoids where a vein has ruptured and a blood clot has formed.  There is no consensus as to why these clots sometimes occur.

What are the symptoms of thrombosed hemorrhoids?

Thrombosed hemorrhoids can be accompanied by swelling and irritation outside of the end of the anal canal. You may experience pain when walking or sitting or going to the bathroom.  In general, thrombosed hemorrhoids can be more painful then non-thrombosed external hemorrhoids because of the additional discomfort caused by the blood clots.  If you are in significant pain, it is always a good idea to immediately go see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

What treatment options do I have for thrombosed hemorrhoids?

While its possible for the body to slowly absorb blood clots, many doctors recommend that they be removed through surgery. Since surgery can be a succesful treatment, it is a good idea to get surgery as soon as possible so as to hasten relief from pain cause by thrombosed hemorrhoids.

There are two types of surgery available for treatment of thrombosed hemorrhoids. The first procedure is faster involves an incision over the clot, allowing the blood to drain out. Unfortuantely this method is often less effective and can lead to additional blood clots forming.

The second and more extensive procedure is what is called a hemorrhoidectomy.  In this procedure the clot and blood vessel are removed. It can involve stitches and a longer recovery time.
